Fox News founder Roger Ailes dies at 77

The conservative mastermind behind the Fox News channel has died, family members reported Thursday.

Roger Ailes began his political career in 1967 as the producer for Richard Nixon’s television appearances.

He became the founder and chief executive of Fox News in 1996, creating a conservative alternative to CNN and MSNBC.

During his 20-year career at Fox News, Ailes saw his channel rise to become the most watched cable news broadcaster in America in the aftermath of President Bill Clinton’s affair.

His downfall began last summer when Fox News personality Gretchen Carlson accused him of trying to sabotage her career after she rejected his sexual advances.

During the fallout, 25 other women came forward claiming Ailes had sexually harassed them throughout his TV career.

Among those women was Fox News’ prime-time anchor, Megyn Kelly.

The scandal forced Ailes to resign in the middle of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Family members have not reported a cause of death.
